Challenging the Right, Augmenting the Left
Recasting Leftist Imagination
Fernwood Publishing, Blackpoint, NS
ISBN: 9781773632292
July 2020
This co-edited volume discusses how the progressive politics can adapt to contemporary crises by discarding outdated ideas, and drawing lessons from history to forge new strategies against capitalism, climate change, and the far right.
The latter chapters in the book I edited explore themes such as engaging the working class in anti-capitalist efforts, countering ethno-nationalism, promoting environmental resistance, and fostering solidarity and ecological responsibility. The book suggests using the history of past failures as a base for future efforts to combat capitalism and the far right, rather than as a cause for more conflict or defeatism.
“By augmenting the left, then, we mean adapting it to the crises of our time and even getting ahead of them. We mean abandoning some of the wishful thinking that has persisted in left-wing thought, reconciling certain counterproductive divisions within the left, and strategizing for the work that lies ahead in this century.”
Introduction to ‘Augmenting the Left’ (p. 3).
Originally published as a special issue in Global Discourse, our 2018 co-edited volume (Routledge) first introduced strategies for overcoming complex social and political barriers in progressive spaces. By offering fresh perspectives on the contradictions within advanced capitalist societies, the collection explores how radical politics can effectively challenge the rise of global ethno-nationalism by fostering deeper popular engagement.
One Road, Many Dreams
China’s Bold Plan to Remake the Global Economy
Bloomsbury Publishing, London, UK
ISBN: 9781912392063
July 2019
This co-written book explores China’s expansive One Belt, One Road initiative, an ambitious plan to reshape the global economy with a multitrillion-dollar investment in infrastructure projects worldwide.
The book examines the OBOR’s potential to transform economic and geopolitical relations, particularly between Europe and Asia, by funding significant developments from ports to pipelines and extending influence through financial might and debt diplomacy. It critically analyzes the challenges and opportunities China faces, questioning whether China’s attempt to assert itself as a superpower and redefine global power structures might be an overreach or a feasible strategy to dominate the global economy.
“Meticulously researched and fluently written, One Road, Many Dreams sparkles with key insights into China’s standing in the world and its significance for the newly emerging world order. A must-read for all those interested in the contours of the Asian century.”
Jorge Heine, (Wilson Center Global Fellow and former Ambassador of Chile to the People’s Republic of China).
